History of the school

It had been a longstanding ambition of Sri P.R.Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha, Managing Trustee of the P. A. C. Ramasamy Raja Education Charity Trust that runs several educational institutions in this town, to start a unique school wherein the right emphasis is laid on the sense of values, wherein learning for the sake of learning is encouraged and the student is prepared to face life not merely materially but also spiritually. Encouraged by H.H.Chinmayananda Swamiji and H.H.Dayananda Saraswati Swamiji, this ambition resulted in Chinmaya Vidyalaya at Rajapalayam.

This school site has a special significance. We record with pride the fact that Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation, had conducted a prayer meeting during one of his visits to Rajapalayam on 25th January 1934, at Ilanthope, the present campus of the Higher Secondary School. 1st Set - 1970

The inauguration of our school took place at the Ramco Recreation Club on the 18th March 1970 under the guidance of Srimathi Sudarsanam Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha (the then President of our School) in the

presence of Ms. Sulochana Menon, who was specially deputed by H.H.Swami Chinmayananda. Miss Vijaya was appointed the first teacher of our school. Later on Miss Vanaja from Coimbatore joined us as per instruction from H.H.Swami Dayananda. These two formed our first team of teachers. Starting out as a small English-medium co-educational day school with these two teachers, catering to the needs of the nursery and first standard classes with a student's strength of 30, today it has become a full fledged institution with an aggregate strength of 51 teachers and 980 students, with two wings - the Smt.P.A.C.R.Sethuramammal Nursery and Primary School at P.S.K. Nagar, Rajapalayam and the P.A.C.Ramasamy Raja Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Ilanthope, about three miles away from Rajapalayam.

The institution owes its existence in its entirety to the munificence of Sri P.R.Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha. It, is wholly owned and supported by the P.A.C.Ramasamy Raja Education Charity Trust. Mr Rajha serves as the Managing Trustee of the Managing Committee of the school and Smt. Chittammal Ramachandra Raja as the Correspondent.

For the first four years, the school functioned from a residential building. The school was shifted to its own building at P.S.K. Nagar in 1974. Foundation Stone for the Junior & Infant School was laid on 25.2.1972 and the school was consecrated on 10.2.1974 by H.H.Swami Chinmayananda.

School consecrated on 10.2.1974 We are profusely grateful to Shri. K.N.P.Nair, Secretary, School Education, Central Chinmaya Mission Trust (CCMT), for his timely and unstinted service, during the early years of our school in the areas of planning and the selection of principal and faculty members. We also remember with gratitude Dr. Vajreswari, the then Director of Education, CCMT, for her help in organizing teacher training programmes and curricular improvements during the initial years of our school.

We wish to record with immense pride that H.H.Swami Chinmayananda during his visit to our campus on 10.08.1977 has inscribed his happiness in our visitor's book as "My dream is coming true here in Rajapalayam. Thank God!"

The entire school functioned at P.S.K.Nagar till January, 1981 when the Higher Secondary School building was completed at the picturesque Ilanthope. The Foundation Stone for the Senior School was laid by H.H.Swami Chinmayananda on 19.4.1979 and the building was opened by H.H.Swami Dayananda Saraswati on 21.11.1980. The Senior school houses the middle, the high and higher secondary school classes. Yagna Committee Members

Sri PACR and H.H.Chinmayanandaji : Sri P.A.C.Ramasamy Raja was a follower of Swamiji for many decades. It all started with a train journey from Madras by Trivandrum Mail when young Swamiji was his co-passenger. Impressed by Swamiji's in-depth knowledge of Vedanta during their conversation he requested Swamiji to break his journey at Rajapalayam. Swamiji willingly obliged and spent a couple of days with Sri PACR. This association and mutual admiration continued to grow from that day.

In 1954, our Founder had the honour of introducing Swamiji to South Tamil Nadu through a forty-day Geeta Gnana Yagna at Madurai. Our Founder was the President of Yagna Committee. It is relevant to mention the unforgettable event when Swamiji visited our Founder in hospital at Madras in 1962 and consoled our ailing Founder by saying that "disease is only in your body, not in your soul; so be brave".

The relationship between Pujya Gurudev and the Chinmaya Mission with the family members continues to grow from strength to strength till date.
